Activists of Inqilab Mancha on Friday staged a protest march in the capital's Shahbagh, demanding the immediate arrest and trial of recently resigned President Md Shahabuddin, while Islami Andolon Bangladesh welcomed his resignation and called for reforms to strengthen the constitutional role of the presidency.

The procession, led by the platform's acting spokesperson Abdullah Al Jaber, began at the Shahbagh intersection and concluded in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at the University of Dhaka, where demonstrators chanted slogans against the former president and warned of a tougher movement if their demands were ignored.

Addressing the rally after the march, Jaber alleged that Shahabuddin had legitimised the "enforced disappearance and murder" committed during the Sheikh Hasina administration and demanded that he be prosecuted.

"Shahabuddin Chuppu legitimised the disappearance and murder of Sheikh Hasina. But after August 5, the BNP government ignored the demand for his removal and trial. We want him to be tried as an accomplice in the genocide. Otherwise, a strict movement will be launched," he said.
