Green chilli prices soar to Tk 320 per Kg in Dhaka, vegetables too

While visiting to several markets, including Bou Bazar in East Rampura, on Saturday found that newly harvested (tender) green chillies were selling for Tk 300 per kg, while mature green chillies reached Tk320 per kg.

Traders attributed the steep price hike to continuous rainfall, which has hampered the harvesting and transportation of chillies and other vegetables. 

Green chillies spoil quickly when exposed to excess water, reducing market supplies and driving prices higher, they added.

According to vendors, tender green chillies were selling for Tk 240 per kg just three days ago, while the same variety was available at Tk 120 per kg only a week earlier. They said prices have more than doubled within days due to weather-related supply shortages.

The supply disruption has also pushed up prices of most vegetables. Current retail prices include brinjal at Tk 100 per kg, sponge gourd at Tk100, bitter gourd at Tk120, okra at Tk80, pointed gourd at Tk60, cucumber at Tk80, tomato at Tk120, hyacinth beans at Tk320, teasel gourd at Tk120, ridge gourd at Tk100, snake gourd at Tk80, and papaya at Tk40 per kg.

Meanwhile, sweet pumpkins are selling for Tk 60 each, ash gourds for Tk 70 each, bottle gourds for Tk 80 each, and green bananas at Tk 40 per bunch of four.
