The countdown to South Asia's biggest football spectacle officially began on Friday as the logo of the TECNO SAFF Championship Bangladesh 2026 was unveiled at a glittering ceremony in an upscale hotel in the capital, setting the stage for the region's premier men's international football tournament.
With just over three months remaining before the championship kicks off in Dhaka, the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), in collaboration with the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) and TECNO Bangladesh, launched the tournament's official identity while confirming a landmark title sponsorship that aims to elevate the competition's commercial reach and regional appeal.
The 15th edition of the biennial championship will be held in Dhaka from November 4 to 17, marking Bangladesh's fourth time as hosts after staging the tournament in 2003, 2009 and 2018. All seven SAFF member associations, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, are expected to participate.
The ceremony brought together senior football administrators from across South Asia, representatives of all seven member associations, national team captains, corporate partners, media representatives, and invited dignitaries, including Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi.
SAFF General Secretary Purushottam Kattel officially introduced the tournament's vision before announcing TECNO as the championship's Official Title Sponsor, describing the partnership as a significant step towards strengthening football across the region.
"The SAFF Championship has produced countless memorable moments for football fans over the years. We believe this partnership will help take the tournament to new heights by expanding its visibility and bringing supporters even closer to the game," Kattel said.
One of the evening's defining moments came with the unveiling of the tournament's official logo through a specially produced audiovisual presentation, symbolising the formal beginning of the championship's journey.
The event also witnessed the exchange of the Official Title Sponsorship Agreement between Kattel and Rezwanul Hoque, Chief Executive Officer of Ismartu Technology BD Limited, representing TECNO Bangladesh.
A recorded video message from Guo Lei, General Manager of TECNO Global, added an international dimension to the occasion. He reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting football as a platform that inspires young people, connects communities and promotes regional unity.
Speaking on behalf of the host federation, Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Fahad Karim described Bangladesh's hosting of the championship as a milestone for the country's football.
"The championship will not only showcase the finest footballing talent in South Asia but also demonstrate Bangladesh's hospitality, organisational capability and growing passion for the game," he said.
Guests were later treated to the tournament's official Kick-Off audiovisual presentation, celebrating Bangladesh as the host nation while highlighting the shared aspirations of all participating member associations.
The formal proceedings concluded with a group photograph featuring SAFF leadership, BFF officials, representatives from all seven member associations and TECNO Bangladesh executives before the programme moved into media interactions and networking sessions.
The launch comes as Bangladesh intensifies preparations for the regional showpiece. BFF President Tabith Awal recently confirmed plans to arrange four international friendlies during the September FIFA international window to sharpen the national team's competitive edge and improve its FIFA ranking. The squad, under German-American head coach Thomas Dooley, will also undergo a 10-day training camp before the September window and a further two-week residential camp ahead of the championship.
Bangladesh will enter the tournament hoping to recreate the glory of 2003, when the hosts lifted their only SAFF title after defeating the Maldives in a dramatic penalty shootout. The men in red and green were also runners-up in 1999 and 2005, while their most recent campaign ended in the semi-finals of the 2023 edition after a narrow 1-0 defeat to eventual finalists Kuwait.
With the official logo now unveiled, a title sponsor secured and preparations gathering pace, the ball is well and truly rolling for a tournament that promises to unite millions of football supporters across South Asia.
For Bangladesh, the stage is set not only to welcome the region but also to dream of another date with history on home soil.
