Rumour of fuel shortage triggers long queues at Bagmara

BAGMARA, RAJSHAHI, July 25: Long queues of vehicles formed at several filling stations in Rajshahi's Bagmara Upazila in recent days as rumours of a possible fuel shortage prompted motorists to buy more fuel than usual.

Motorcycle riders, along with drivers of private cars and microbuses, were seen waiting in long lines at Bhabaniganj Filling Station, Rokeya Filling Station in Shikdari and two other fuel stations in the upazila.

Many bikers queued for hours in an attempt to refill their tanks, leading to congestion and delays.

Several customers alleged that although fuel stocks were available, they were being told by some filling stations that there was no fuel, fuelling public frustration. Some claimed they had waited for hours but were unable to purchase fuel.

No clear explanation was available from the filling station authorities regarding the sudden rush. It also remained unclear whether the situation stemmed from an actual fuel shortage or a disruption in supply.

However, owners of some filling stations believe the surge in demand was driven mainly by rumours rather than any real supply crisis.

Selim Reza, a retail fuel seller in Goalkandi Union, said an unusually large number of motorcycle owners had been seeking extra fuel since morning.

"By the afternoon, I heard that many people were buying more fuel than they needed because they feared there could be a shortage," he said.

Motorcyclist Shamim Ahmed said he had also heard rumours of a possible fuel crisis.

"I've heard there may be a fuel shortage, so I'm trying to buy a little more fuel than usual," he said.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Selim Ahmed said the administration was monitoring the situation.

"If anyone is found involved in any irregularities, legal action will be taken against them," he said.
