Rohingya child freed four days after abduction in Ukhiya camp

A Rohingya child abducted from a refugee camp in Ukhiya was released after four days in captivity, with family members alleging the kidnappers freed him after receiving a ransom.

The victim, Rahmat Ali, son of Mohammad Junaid, was reportedly abducted on July 22 from E-Block of Rohingya Camp No. 11 in Kutupalong.

Residents of the camp alleged the kidnappers tortured the child during captivity, sent videos of the abuse to his family and demanded a ransom for his release. However, the amount allegedly paid could not be confirmed.

A video circulated by the abductors reportedly showed the child tied up and pleading with his family to save him.

Mohammad Shariful Islam, Camp-in-Charge (Deputy Secretary) of Camp No. 11, said Rahmat Ali was released on Sunday. He said the matter had been settled by the family but he was unaware of further details.

Additional DIG Mohammad Siraj Amin, Commander of the 14th Armed Police Battalion (APBN), said law enforcement agencies are working to curb crime in the camps and take legal action whenever complaints are received.

According to Rohingya community sources, at least 25 Rohingya children were reportedly abducted from camps between January and July this year, raising concerns over child safety in the settlements.
