Police arrested 12 alleged activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Monday afternoon while they were allegedly preparing for a procession marking the anniversary of Jubo League's affiliated organisation, Swechchhasebak League, police said.
The arrests were made in the Shirabo area along the Asian Highway under Jampur Union. Police said the detainees were later handed over to Sonargaon Police Station, where a case was filed on Monday night. They are scheduled to be produced before a Narayanganj court on Tuesday.
The arrestees were identified as Raihan Mia, Shawon Sheikh, Rabbi Mia, Bijoy Pal, Surjyadeb Chandra Pal, Ishan Saha, Raj Saha, Rudra Deb, Abir Hasan, Shahriar Hasan, Iman Mia and Zobayer Hossain. They are residents of Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj and Noakhali districts.
According to police, the group was preparing to bring out a procession on the Asian Highway to mark the founding anniversary of Swechchhasebak League, an associate body of the Awami League. Police said local BNP activists noticed the gathering and chased them, after which officers from the Taltala Bazar Investigation Centre assisted in arresting the 12 individuals as they attempted to flee.
Inspector Md Jasim Uddin of the Taltala Bazar Investigation Centre said the detainees were handed over to Sonargaon Police Station following their arrest.
"A case has been filed against them, and they will be sent to court," the police official said.
