Satkhira AL leader sent to jail; remand hearing set for Wednesday

A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the imprisonment of Mohammad Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the Satkhira district unit of the Awami League, following his arrest in a murder case linked to the 2024 July movement.

Court also fixed Wednesday for a hearing on a police plea seeking a seven-day remand. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order after police produced Nazrul before the court.

Investigators sought the remand, saying Nazrul's interrogation was necessary to verify evidence, identify other suspects and alleged collaborators and advance the investigation. Police also argued that he could abscond if released on bail.

Nazrul was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) from the Bashundhara Residential Area on July 27.

According to the case statement, Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rup, a 21-year-old computer science student at Daffodil International University, was shot in the right eye during an anti-discrimination student protest near the Kawran Bazar Metro Rail Station on August 24, 2024.

He was taken to hospital, where he was later declared dead.

The victim's father, A.K.M. Rakibul Ahmed, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station, naming 223 accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The allegations remain under investigation, and the court has yet to rule on the police remand application.
