DU to review AL regime appointments

Dhaka University’s syndicate ordered review of every teacher, officer and staff appointment made between January 2009 to June 2024; alongside fresh push to punish faculty members accused of siding against students in 2024 uprising.

Decision came on Tuesday syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. ABM Obaidul Islam, who confirmed the decisions to media.

Probe panel led by pro-VC (academic) Dr. Abdus Salam, with faculty deans on board, will comb through appointments. Separate 4-member committee, DU VC, both pro-VCs and syndicate member Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, will weigh a list of 125 teachers flagged by the Anti-Fascist Teachers’ Platform for allegedly turning on students during the July 2024 unrest.

Syndicate also voted to send recommendation to tribunal seeking the permanent expulsion of Prof Sadeka Halim, former dean of the Faculty of Social Science, over her action during uprising.

Separately, World Bank and UGC funded research grants under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project from same period will face a fund-use audit, headed by pro-VC (administration) Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane.

Outside the meeting, DUCSU representatives along with Islami Chhatra Shibir activists protested rumoured hall-seat policy extending irregular students’ residency by a year which was a proposal DU syndicate ultimately shelved pending further consultation.
