Labour and Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury inspected Sreemangal and Bhanugach railway stations on Saturday as part of preliminary preparations and a feasibility assessment for the proposed Sylhet-Jaflong railway line.

The minister arrived at Sreemangal Railway Station around 11am aboard the Sylhet-bound intercity Parabat Express and inspected the station’s infrastructure, passenger services and operational arrangements.

He also discussed the station’s activities, existing problems and possible areas for development with officials concerned.

Railway Ministry Secretary Md Fahimul Islam, Labour and Employment Ministry Secretary Md Abdur Rahman, Bangladesh Railway Director General Md Afzal Hossain and senior officials of the Railway Ministry and Bangladesh Railway accompanied him.

Later, the Parabat Express made a brief stop at Bhanugach Railway Station in Kamalganj, where the minister and officials spoke to local people. Passengers raised issues concerning railway services, station management, infrastructure and passenger facilities.

The minister assured them of taking necessary steps to resolve the problems quickly.

Local BNP leaders and activists welcomed the minister with flowers at Bhanugach Railway Station.

According to sources, the minister’s visit is part of a feasibility assessment that includes inspecting railway stations and tracks from Brahmanbaria Railway Station to Sylhet. Officials will gather field-level information on infrastructure, safety, passenger services and future development plans.

The proposed Sylhet-Jaflong railway line is expected to expand rail connectivity with the tourism-dependent Jaflong region and potentially boost communication, trade and economic activities in the Sylhet region.
