Nabisco fined Tk 2 lakh for selling underweight biscuits

Nabisco Biscuit and Bread Factory Limited has been fined Tk 2 lakh for allegedly supplying biscuits weighing less than the amount declared on the product packaging, following a mobile court operation conducted by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
The BSTI said the actual weight of biscuits from several brands produced by the company was found to be lower than the declared weight on the packets. The investigation also found different and misleading weight information printed on the front and back sides of the same packaging.
The penalty was imposed on Sunday under Section 24(41) of the Weights and Measures Standards Act, 2018, during an operation conducted in the Tejgaon Industrial Area of Dhaka.
The mobile court was led by BSTI Executive Magistrate Lutfunnesa Khanam, with support from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
During the drive, officials checked the weight of various Nabisco biscuit products against their registered packaging information and found discrepancies between the declared and actual quantities.
BSTI said providing misleading information on product packaging can confuse consumers and violates existing laws. The mobile court instructed the company to ensure accurate weight declarations and comply with packaging regulations in production and marketing.
The authorities also warned that stricter legal action would be taken if similar violations occur again.
BSTI Prosecuting Officer Field Officer Sumaiya Afroze Liza (CM) and Metrology Inspector Ravi Mohammad Itmam were present during the operation. The institution said its mobile court drives and market monitoring activities would continue to protect consumer rights and ensure fair trade practices.
