Robbers loot Tk 57 lakh from bKash representatives on Teknaf - Cox’s Bazar highway

A group of armed robbers allegedly intercepted a bus on the Teknaf-Cox’s Bazar highway and looted Tk 57 lakh from two bKash sales representatives on Sunday afternoon. One of the representatives was injured after being stabbed when he resisted the attackers.

The incident took place around 1:40pm near Bridge No. 14 in Damdamia area under Teknaf upazila, close to the port area. The injured bKash representative was identified as Md Al Arman, 26, a resident of Jalia Para area of Teknaf municipality.

According to locals, three bKash sales representatives were travelling by a Palaki Paribahan bus from Teknaf bus station to deliver money to agents in Hnila and Whykong areas. When the bus reached the Damdamia area, around one kilometre south of Damdamia Border Outpost, a group of 15-20 armed men blocked the road by placing trees across it.

The attackers then entered the bus and snatched bags containing money from two bKash representatives. When Arman tried to resist, the robbers stabbed him, injuring his upper right arm. The attackers also fired several blank shots to create panic before fleeing the scene.

bKash agent owner Abdur Karim claimed that the robbers took Tk 60 lakh, while police said the amount was Tk 57 lakh.

Locals rescued the injured Arman and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex for treatment. After the robbery, the attackers fled towards the nearby hilly area. The bus later reached the Damdamia checkpoint, where the matter was reported to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members.

Police, BGB and Coast Guard personnel rushed to the spot and launched an operation to track down the suspects.

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Islam said the robbers stopped the Palaki bus near the port area, stabbed a passenger and took away Tk 57 lakh. He said the attackers had blocked the road by placing trees, indicating that the robbery was carried out in a planned manner.

The OC added that police took control of the situation and kept the bus in their custody. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved and recover the stolen money, he said.
