IU Professor Zakir Hossain appointed VC of Sunamganj Science and Technology University

Professor Dr Md Zakir Hossain of the Department of Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies at the Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has been appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Sunamganj Science and Technology University (SSTU) for a four-year term.

The Ministry of Education's Secondary and Higher Education Division issued a gazette notification announcing the appointment. The order was signed by Assistant Secretary Md Shah Alam Siraj.

According to the notification, the appointment was made under Section 10(1) of the Sunamganj Science and Technology University Act, 2020, with the approval of the President of Bangladesh in his capacity as the chancellor of the university.

The notification states that Prof Zakir will serve as vice-chancellor for four years from the date of joining or until the end of his regular service, whichever comes first.

As per the terms of his appointment, he will continue to receive the salary and allowances attached to his substantive position, along with other benefits admissible under government rules. He has also been directed to reside on the university campus and discharge his duties as the institution's full-time chief executive officer. The chancellor retains the authority to terminate the appointment if necessary.

Reacting to his appointment, Prof Zakir expressed gratitude to the government and the university authorities for placing their confidence in him.

"I will work to establish Sunamganj Science and Technology University as a modern institution of higher education and a centre for quality teaching, innovation and internationally recognised research," he said.

He also stressed the importance of fostering an inclusive and academically vibrant campus, calling on teachers, students, officers and employees to work together to ensure good governance, transparency and a peaceful educational environment.

Prof Zakir, a senior academic at the Islamic University, has long been involved in teaching, research and academic administration. University insiders expressed hope that his experience would contribute to the institutional development of SSTU and strengthen its academic and research activities in the coming years.
