The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has dismissed reports that DBL Group and several other garment factories have been shut down due to gas and electricity shortages, describing such claims as "false and baseless."

In a press statement issued on Monday, the apparel exporters' body said recent reports published by some media outlets, online news portals and circulated on social media regarding factory closures had created unnecessary confusion among stakeholders and could undermine the stability of the country's garment industry.

According to BGMEA, despite the ongoing gas and power crisis, its member factories have managed to keep 60 to 70 percent of their production activities operational with government support and the concerted efforts of factory management.

The association said many factories are adjusting leave schedules and working hours to cope with the energy shortage. As part of this arrangement, several factories will observe leave on Thursday by coordinating with the upcoming August 5 public holiday and the weekly holiday. The lost working days will be adjusted later in accordance with labour regulations.
