A Dhaka court on Monday formally began the trial of former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman in a case over allegedly acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.

Judge B.M. Tarikul Kabir of the Divisional Special Judge’s Court framed charges against Matiur, who pleaded not guilty. The court fixed September 14 for the recording of prosecution witnesses. The court also rejected Matiur’s bail petition after hearing submissions from both the defence and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the ACC charge sheet, Matiur concealed assets worth Tk 12.43 million in his wealth statement and illegally amassed Tk 54.1 million through abuse of power, bribery and corruption.

The ACC launched its investigation in June 2024 after Matiur came under public scrutiny following controversy over the reported purchase of a sacrificial goat worth Tk 1.5 million by a young man alleged to be linked to his family.
