Six Jailed for Life over Keraniganj Gang Rape

A Dhaka tribunal on Tuesday sentenced six men to life imprisonment for abducting and gang-raping two women in South Keraniganj as they were returning home from a friend’s birthday celebration in 2022.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Munshi Md. Mashiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4.

The convicts are Rahul, Md. Diamond, Afsar Uddin Anim, Parvez Haque Palash, Minhaj alias Minhaj Abedin and Minhaj alias Babu alias Minhaj Babu. Each was also fined Tk 100,000. 

The tribunal directed the Dhaka District Magistrate to recover the fines from the convicts’ movable and immovable assets and pay the amount to the victims or their families.

Rahul remains absconding, and the court issued an arrest warrant against him. The remaining convicts were sent to prison following the verdict.

According to the prosecution, the victims and several friends were returning home after celebrating a birthday on June 25, 2022, when the accused intercepted them in the Shubhadya area. They assaulted the victims’ friends, robbed them of cash and mobile phones, and took the two women to a secluded area where they gang-raped them and recorded the assault.

The victims were later rescued, while RAB arrested Minhaj and recovered one of their mobile phones, which investigators said contained a video of the assault.

A charge sheet was subsequently filed against the six accused. After examining 12 prosecution witnesses, the tribunal delivered the verdict.
