Chhatra-dal-Shibir clash at JNU, 15 injured

At least 15 were reported injured in a clash between Chhatra-dal and Chhatra-shibir at Jagannath University (JNU).

While taking the injured to a nearby National Medical College Hospital, another round of chasing and counter-chasing occurred within the two groups.

Additional police personnel were deployed around the hospital area to keep the situation under control.

The clash began during a programme organized around the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman at the university on Tuesday, August 4.

According to eyewitnesses, tensions first flared between the activists of these two student political organizations over showcasing demands to the UGC chairman. Later, the situation escalated into a violent clash.

After the clash, JCD members took position on the campus, while injured Shibir members were taken to the hospital.

As various activists from Shibir unit gathered around the National Medical College Hospital, JCD members took position in front of the hospital. At one point, chase and counter chase begin again between the two groups.

Both of the groups threw bricks and coconut shells, while some were seen carrying local weapons.

Jagannath Univeristy Shibir president Abdul Alim Arif and JCD convenor Yasin Saif were injured in the clash.

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman said after the clash on campus, the injured were taken to the hospital, where another round of chasing and counter-chasing took place. Police quickly brought the situation under control.
