Benapole Port Director Shamim shifted amid row

Government has transferred Md. Shamim Hossain, widely discussed Traffic Director of Benapole Land Port, to the post of Deputy Director (Local Government) at Natore Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Ministry of Public Administration issued this notification on Sunday, (August 2).

A widespread discussion has erupted across the port following his transfer. Allegations of customs evasion, clearance of undeclared goods, weight scale manipulation, and administrative irregularities were raised against him for a long time.

For this reason, port workers are considering this shifting significant. At the same time, they are demanding impartial investigation into allegations made against Shamim.

According to the notification issued by the Deputation-2 branch of the Ministry of Public Administration (Memo No. 05.00.0000.140.19.0003.22.416, dated August 2, 2026), BCS (Administration) cadre officer Md. Shamim Hossain (ID No. 16399) currently serves as the Traffic Director of Benapole Land Port.

Earlier, he was ordered to be posted to the same position in Faridpur. The latest notification revised that order. Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Mohammad Nur-e-Alam signed the notification by order of the President.

Port traders expressed mixed reactions of relief and curiosity after the transfer news spread. Several traders and port-related individuals alleged that a powerful syndicate was active behind many incidents of undeclared goods seizures and duty evasion at Benapole Port over the past year. They claimed questions were raised about the Traffic Director's role regarding that syndicate's activities.

Traders alleged that certain port officials and employees were kept in key positions to facilitate weight scale manipulation, store undeclared goods in various sheds, and allow illegal clearance of goods. They said these irregularities impacted revenue collection.

The issue gained further attention as a revenue deficit of about Tk 4,731 crore occurred at the Benapole Customs House in the current 2025-26 fiscal year.

However, government investigations have not confirmed the involvement of any specific individual in this revenue deficit.
