Implement Court Verdict on Teachers’ Benefits

Dear Sir,

Around 6,000 teachers of government secondary schools have remained deprived of their due time scale and selection grade despite serving continuously for 15 to 21 years. Teachers recruited in 2005 and 2006 have been the worst affected, while many appointed in 2009, 2010 and 2011 are also facing the same injustice.

Although both the High Court and the Appellate Division ruled in favour of the teachers, and the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Law have all supported implementing the verdict, the benefits are yet to be granted. This prolonged delay has pushed many teachers into severe financial hardship, while some have already retired or even died without receiving their lawful entitlements. 

The government should immediately convene the Departmental Promotion Committee meeting and implement the court verdict without further delay. Ensuring teachers’ legitimate rights is essential for maintaining morale and safeguarding the quality of secondary education.
