Import-export trade suspended at Benapole Port on July Uprising Day

JASHORE, Aug 5: All import-export activities, along with customs and port operations, remained suspended through the Benapole-Petrapole land port on Wednesday, marking the July Uprising Day. 

However, passport-holder movement between the two countries continued as usual.

The matter was confirmed by Badruzzaman Boni, General Secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Staff Association.

He said that due to the government holiday on Wednesday for the July Uprising Day, no import or export was taking place through the Petrapole-Benapole port. Customs and port operations were also closed.

Import-export activities, along with customs and port operations, will resume on Thursday morning.

Saifur Rahman, OC of Benapole International Checkpost Police Immigration, said that although trade was suspended on Wednesday, passport-holder movement between the two countries remained normal.

Shamim Hossain, Director (Traffic) of Benapole Port, said that due to the government holiday on the July Uprising Day, all activities, including import-export, customs and port operations, were closed on Wednesday. Operations will resume on Thursday morning. However, passport-holder movement through the Benapole checkpost remained normal. Indian empty trucks wishing to return after unloading goods at the port are allowed to do so.

It may be noted that daily, 250 to 300 trucks carrying various goods are imported from India through Benapole port, while 50 to 120 trucks of goods are exported to India. The government earns approximately Tk 40 crore in revenue daily from import trade.
