Govt orders tightened security at all airports ahead of ICAO safety audit

The government has directed all civil airports across Bangladesh to strengthen security measures ahead of the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) upcoming security audit. Authorities have also ordered the implementation of a uniform security protocol for VIPs, CIPs and regular passengers, alongside plans to install anti-drone systems to prevent unauthorized drone operations near airports.
The directives were issued on Thursday during the first meeting of the reconstituted National Civil Aviation Security Committee (NCASC), held at the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) in the capital.
The meeting was chaired by Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Afroza Khanam, while Special Assistant M. Rashiduzzaman Millat attended as vice-chair. Senior officials from CAAB, law enforcement agencies, intelligence organizations and other relevant government departments were also present.
Addressing the meeting, Adviser Afroza Khanam instructed all concerned authorities to expedite the implementation of decisions taken at previous NCASC meetings. She said Bangladesh's international reputation is closely linked to the outcome of the forthcoming ICAO security audit and stressed the need for full compliance with international aviation security standards.
She also emphasized that the same security rules must apply equally to VIPs, CIPs and ordinary passengers. In addition, she called for coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies to ensure improved and uninterrupted services for expatriate travellers.
Special Assistant M. Rashiduzzaman Millat said the government would take steps to install modern anti-drone systems to prevent unauthorized drone flights around airport premises. He noted that the NCASC meeting was held after nearly three years and stressed that the effective implementation of its decisions should now be the top priority. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining adequate stocks of security equipment and scanning devices.
The meeting discussed measures to further strengthen Bangladesh's civil aviation security, including enhanced intelligence sharing among agencies, implementation of the National Civil Aviation Security Programme, compliance with ICAO security standards, adoption of advanced security technologies and preparations to address future security challenges.
Participants also emphasized the need to reinforce security at the entry points of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, improve the effectiveness of the Under Vehicle Scanning System (UVSS), and sign memorandums of understanding (MoUs) among relevant agencies to improve emergency response capabilities at all civil airports.
The committee further directed CAAB, the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn), police, Ansar personnel and airport magistrates to intensify efforts to address traffic congestion, unauthorized gatherings, begging and illegal luggage-wrapping activities in the landside area of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. It also recommended taking legal action where necessary to improve passenger services and ensure overall airport security.
