Farmer killed in Satkhira lightning strike

A farmer was killed after being struck by lightning at Tala upazila in Satkhira district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Chittaranjan Aich, 48, son of late Kanailal Aich. He had a cloth trading alongwith farming.

The incident took place approximately 12noon in Gopalpur village when while Chittaranjan Aich was planting paddy saplings.

Shyamal Biswas, a resident of Gopalpur village in the upazila, said Chittaranjan Aich went to a waterbody near his home on Saturday morning with eight to ten farmers to plant paddy on their own land. Around noon, the sky became cloudy. While Chittaranjan was working in the paddy field, the lightning struck him directly, leaving him dead on the spot.

Other farmers who were working nearby recovered Chittaranjan’s body and took it to his home.

Tala Police Station OC  (Investigation) Md. Sakhawat Hossain confirmed the death and said police had visited the scene.
