Human chain in Jamalpur demands speedy trial of Journalist Nadim’s killers

A human chain was held in Jamalpur demanding that all those involved in the murder of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim be included in the charge sheet and that the case be tried quickly.
Nadim was the vice-president of Jamalpur Online Journalists Association and a journalist for Ekattor TV and BanglaNews.
The human chain was organised by the Jamalpur Press Club on Saturday (August 8) at Press Club Road in the town.
Monira Begum, wife of slain journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim and the complainant in the case, alleged that even after three years of her husband’s murder, the case has not made proper progress.
She said that although the investigation agency and investigating officers had been changed following court orders, repeated charge sheets were being submitted in a way that did not properly identify all those involved.
She alleged that the main accused, Awami League leader Mahmudur Rahman Babu, had obtained bail and was openly moving around and influencing the investigation. As a result, the family is worried about getting justice and about their safety.
Monira said the case was first investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). CCTV footage showed that Nadim was attacked while returning home on a motorcycle. The attackers dragged him into an alley and beat him.
She alleged that the CID limited its investigation to the CCTV footage and later submitted a charge sheet excluding some people who were directly involved in the killing.
After the complainant rejected the charge sheet, the court assigned the investigation to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). During the RAB investigation, two accused, including Golam Kibria Sumon, who was identified in the CCTV footage, were excluded from the charge sheet. The charges in the case were also reduced.
Later, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) was given responsibility for the investigation. However, a similar charge sheet was submitted.
Although the main accused, Mahmudur Rahman Babu, was included in the latest charge sheet, his son Rifat, who was allegedly directly involved in the killing, was excluded.
Monira Begum demanded an investigation through a judicial magistrate to ensure a fair and speedy trial.
At the human chain, journalist Mojahid Babu and eyewitnesses to the killing said that officers from every investigation agency had taken statements from eyewitnesses. However, the statements were not properly reflected in the charge sheets.
The speakers alleged that Muklesur Rahman Panna, an AIG of police during the Awami League government, and ASP Redwan Roni were relatives of the accused and had influenced the investigation. They alleged that this resulted in repeated “ordered charge sheets.”
They also alleged that Mahmudur Rahman Babu had spent a large amount of black money to influence the investigation.
The human chain was chaired by Jamalpur Press Club President Hafiz Raihan Sadar and conducted by its General Secretary Lutfar Rahman.
Among others, journalist Nadim’s father Haji Abdul Karim, journalists Bazlur Rahman, Sajjad Ansari, Kafi Parvez, Shaukat Zaman, Zulfikar Zahid Habib, Zakaria Jahangir, GM Fatiul Hafiz Babu and Mojahid Babu spoke at the programme.
Journalists from the Jamalpur Press Club and different upazilas of the district took part in the human chain.
