3 Bangladeshi fishermen abducted by Arakan Army in Teknaf

Three Bangladeshi fishermen, including a teenager, were allegedly abducted along with their fishing boat by members of the Myanmar-based armed group Arakan Army from the Naikhyongdia area near the mouth of the Naf River in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 11:30am at the confluence of the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal, according to local sources.

The abducted fishermen were identified as Jasim Uddin, 30, son of Leda Mia; Mohammad Ismail, 27, son of Momtaz Mia; and an unidentified teenage boy. All three are from Jaliapara area of Shah Porir Dwip under Sabrang Union of Teknaf.

Abdul Gani, president of the Shah Porir Dwip Jaliapara boat landing committee, said the three fishermen went to the Naf River to catch fish on Saturday morning when members of the Arakan Army detained them and took them away.

He said 20 to 25 fishermen had previously been taken away from the same area.

“Fishing in the Naf River and the sea has become extremely risky for us. Fishermen are always living in fear of the Arakan Army. Whenever they get an opportunity, they come by speedboat and take fishermen away at gunpoint,” Abdul Gani said.

Abdul Mannan, acting chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad, said he had learned that three fishermen from Jaliapara had been taken away by the Arakan Army. He said efforts were being made to verify the incident and inform the local administration.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Anik Chowdhury confirmed that he had received information about the abduction of the three fishermen.

“We have learned that the Arakan Army has taken three fishermen. We are communicating with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over the matter,” he said.

The UNO said necessary measures would be taken to secure the fishermen’s release.
