Minister: Bangladesh among countries most vulnerable to climate change

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with coastal areas facing the greatest risks.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a 15-day divisional tree-planting campaign and tree fair at Bells Park in Barishal city on Sunday morning.
“Climate change is happening continuously. Bangladesh is among the countries at risk, with coastal areas facing greater risks,” the minister said, stressing the need for a global solution to the crisis.
He also urged people to be more conscious about energy use, warning that failure to do so could make temperatures unsuitable for human habitation.
Swapan said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is not pursuing “cheap development”, citing the government’s initiative to plant 250 million trees over five years, at a rate of 50 million trees annually.
The tree fair is being organised across the country as part of the initiative, he said.
Earlier, the minister formally opened the campaign and fair by releasing balloons and festoons before visiting stalls operated by participating nurseries.
A total of 50 nurseries from different districts of Barishal division are participating in the fair, displaying and selling saplings of various species.
The fair will remain open from 9am to 10pm every day for 15 days.
Officials from the divisional and police administrations, representatives of public and private organisations, and students from schools and colleges attended the inauguration.
