Int'l Indigenous Peoples Day observed in Moulvibazar

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Sunday with a rally and a discussion meeting.
The event was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Adivasi Forum Moulvibazar District Committee, KUBRAJ Inter-Punji Development Organization, and Dharitri Rokshay Amra (DHORA) at the Zila Parishad Auditorium in Kulaura.
Vice Chancellor of Metropolitan University, Sylhet, Dr Mohammad Zahirul Haque Shakil addressed the program as the chief guest. KUBRAJ Inter-Punji Development Organization Acting President Protyush Asakra presided over the meeting, while Helena Hiramon Talang moderated the session.
In his speech, Dr Shakil highlighted that the world is moving forward amid various crises, including climate change, environmental degradation, pressure on natural resources, irregular weather patterns, and prevailing social inequalities.
He emphasized that indigenous communities suffer the most from these crises and called for effective state initiatives to secure their rights, eliminate discrimination, and improve their living standards.
Kulaura Upazila BNP General Secretary Badruzzaman Sojol, Kulaura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahirul Islam Munna, Bangladesh Jasad Central Organizational Secretary Moinul Islam Shamim, and Kulaura Upazila Communist Party General Secretary Mahbub Karim Mintu spoke as special guests.
Among others who addressed the meeting were Convener of Greater Sylhet Indigenous Rights Protection Citizens Committee Advocate Derrick Prentice Dudley, Kulaura Udichi Shilpigosthi General Secretary Nirmalya Mitra Sumon, Voice of River Manu Chief Executive ASM Saleh Sohel, Caritas Sylhet Regional Director Boniface Khonglah, Coordinator of Bangladesh Oblates Justice and Peace Father Valentine Talang, KUBRAJ Inter-Punji Development Organization General Secretary Flora Babli Talang, and Upazila Press Club General Secretary Najmul Bari Sohel.
Earlier, a colorful rally was brought out in the town to mark the occasion.
