Authorities have stopped the marriage of a 13-year-old sixth-grade student in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachhari and fined her father Tk 10,000 for arranging the underage marriage.
The incident took place around 2:30pm on Sunday (August 9) in Thalipara area of Patachhara Union No. 2, where the family had arranged a wedding ceremony for the girl.
Acting on a tip-off, Ramgarh Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Dwin Al Jannat went to the spot and confirmed that the bride was only 13 years old. The marriage was immediately stopped.
According to the mobile court, the girl's father, Md Mohin Uddin Manik, 38, was fined Tk 10,000 under the Child Marriage Restraint Act. Written undertakings were also taken from the guardians of both sides, warning them against arranging any marriage for the girl in the future.
Executive Magistrate Dwin Al Jannat said the authorities acted promptly after receiving information about the child marriage. She confirmed that the girl's age was verified at the scene and that legal action was taken accordingly.
Under Bangladesh law, arranging or solemnising the marriage of a girl below the age of 18 is a punishable offence.
