Two get death penalty for raping housewife in Jamalpur

A court in Jamalpur on Monday sentenced two men to death for raping a housewife after holding her hostage by showing obscene photos in Dewanganj upazila in 2022. The court also fined each of them Tk 1 lakh.

Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim pronounced the verdict around noon.

The condemned convicts are Ashkar Ali and Zahidul Islam, residents of Nimimari village in Dewanganj upazila.

According to the court, the two men entered the house of the housewife in the Nimimari area on the night of March 31, 2022, and raped her after holding her hostage by showing obscene photographs.

Following the incident, the victim's son, Sohag, filed a case with the police. Later, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a charge sheet after completing its investigation.

After examining six witnesses, including a magistrate and a doctor, the court found the charges proven and handed down the death sentences.

State counsel Advocate Fazlul Haque said the Tk 1 lakh fine imposed on each convict would be paid to the victim's family as compensation. Both convicts were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced.
