Police solved the murder mystery of a 60-year-old man in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur within 16 hours, relying on a small clue - wood borer dust found on his body.
Police arrested the victim's wife, Shefali Begum, and their three sons - Rubel Sharif, Ruman Sharif, and Russel Sharif - in connection with the murder of Ismail Sharif. A blood-stained axe used in the killing was also recovered.
The victim's younger brother, Zainal Sharif, filed a murder case with Bhandaria Police Station on Sunday night.
Bhandaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dewan Jaglul Hasan disclosed the details during a press conference on Sunday night.
According to police, locals spotted the body near the Kacha River embankment in Telikhali Union around 6:00AM on August 9 and informed the police. Police recovered the body and identified the victim.
Initially, the murder appeared clueless. However, while analyzing the inquest report and photographs, investigating officers noticed wood borer dust on the victim's head and ears. Suspecting that the crime occurred inside a wooden house, police inspected Ismail Sharif's residence.
During the search, police found wood borer dust on the veranda roof, signs of a scuffle on the floor, and clear bloodstains inside the house.
Under interrogation, the victim's youngest son, Russel Sharif, confessed to the crime. Based on his information, police recovered a blood-stained axe hidden under a bed on the veranda. A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) crime scene team later collected evidence, including blood-stained soil and wood dust.
Police noted that bloodstains were also found on Shefali Begum's clothes. The collected samples are being sent for DNA testing.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the murder stemmed from long-standing family and conjugal disputes. The victim was hacked to death inside his home before his body was dumped near the embankment to mislead investigators.
All four arrestees have been sent to court, and a full report will be submitted after further investigation and DNA analysis.
