Promising Wushu athlete not included in China training list!

 
Bangladesh's promising senior Taolu Wushu athlete Nazmul Hasan has been left out of the 30-member list for the 'Training Course on Athletes of Taolu Wushu for Bangladesh' in China, raising questions over the selection and assessment process.

A member of the Bangladesh Army Wushu team, Nazmul has established himself as one of the country's leading Taolu performers. He has been a regular gold medallist in recent national competitions, including the 2025 National Wushu Championship. Internationally, he won two bronze medals at the Asian Traditional Wushu Competition and a gold and a silver at the 2021 IWUF Wushu Taolu Virtual Competition.

Yet the athlete, who is regarded as one of Bangladesh's medal prospects in the international arena, does not feature in the current 30-member list.

According to a official of Bangladesh Wushu Federation (BWUF), Nazmul was included in the federation's initial nomination. However, his name disappeared when a consolidated list was subsequently prepared with nominations from the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP). The federation later raised a written objection to the list on 2 August.

The latest document submitted by the federation on 9 August was an assessment of the list received from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Although the federation again highlighted Nazmul's credentials and potential, his name was still not added to the 30-member list.

It raises the question of why a quality and promising athlete like Nazmul was not included when Bangladesh expects a result from him at the upcoming South Asian Games.

The controversy also initially centred on BKSP's representation, the inclusion of some younger athletes and two coaches described as Sanda coaches. However, a BKSP senior Wushu coach said the programme is not an exclusive senior High Performance camp, but a basic seminar and training course aimed at improving fundamentals and preparing athletes for advanced programmes. He also said the athletes concerned have experience in both Taolu and Sanda, while the two coaches possess practical knowledge of both disciplines. Those explanations have largely settled the peripheral questions.

The bigger issue remains unanswered: how did a senior athlete with national and international medals, whom the federation itself considers a future medal prospect, fall through the selection net for a Taolu-specific training course? The BWUF official could not provide a clear answer. The federation failed to ensure Nazmul's inclusion in the list. 

Nor did the authorities responsible for scrutinising the nominations identify the omission and correct it. With the final list yet to be issued, the ball is now in the authorities' court to ensure the selection process is properly reviewed.
