State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad said canals will be re-dug in Rupganj even if political party leaders and activists occupy them.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (August 11) afternoon while inspecting waterlogged areas in the No. 5 Canal zone of Golakandail Union under Rupganj upazila. He also visited Jatramura and Rupshi Sluice Gate areas under Tarabo Municipality.
"Rupganj was supposed to be full of beauty. Looking at the current situation, it seems no work was done in the past. Fascists remained busy looting throughout their illegal tenure. Around five lakh residents here are trapped in waterlogging because of just five individuals. We will work for those five lakh people. We will do whatever necessary to recover canal land from those five individuals. Please cooperate with our government. We will start the canal recovery drive within two to three days alongside you," Farhad Hossain Azad said.
He further noted that canal digging in Bangladesh first began under the leadership of martyred President Ziaur Rahman.
"The previous fascist regime later halted the canal digging initiative. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, worthy son of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, has resumed that work. InshaAllah, the people will start reaping its benefits soon," the State Minister added.
Narayanganj-1 constituency Member of Parliament Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu, former general secretary of District BNP Golam Faruq Khokon, convener of Upazila BNP Advocate Mahfuzur Rahman, member secretary Basir Uddin Bachchu, district BNP members Anwar Sadat Sayem and Ashraful Haque Ripon, Golakandail Union BNP president Aziz Master, general secretary Abdul Matin, and acting convener of Upazila Yuba Dal Aminul Islam Prince were present, among others.
