Accused appears in court on stretcher, judge advises treatment

A former trainee assistant officer of Farmers Bank appeared before a Dhaka court on a stretcher after travelling by ambulance from Magura to surrender in a Tk 4 crore embezzlement case.

Ruhul Amin Palash appeared before Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir on Tuesday and sought bail, citing his poor health. After hearing both sides, the judge advised him to continue his medical treatment, according to his lawyer Md Ramzan Ali Ripon.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case in September 2023, accusing five people of allegedly embezzling Tk 4.03 crore through forgery and fraud at the bank’s Bakshiganj branch in Jamalpur.

The accused include former Padma Bank audit committee chairman Mahbubul Haque Chisty, his daughter Rimi Chisty, former assistant officer Fakhruzzaman, Palash and Kamruzzaman. A subsequent charge sheet also implicated the branch head and first vice-president, Masudur Rahman Khan.

The court issued arrest warrants against Palash and three others in January after taking cognisance of the charge sheet.

Palash’s lawyer told the court that his client was not involved in the alleged embezzlement and was suffering from a serious neurological condition that had left him paralysed from the waist down and bedridden.

After the hearing, Palash left the court in an ambulance.
