Blind widow gang-raped in Jhalakathi: 2 Detained

Police have detained two individuals over the alleged gang-rape of a 60-year-old blind widow after luring her away from Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital on Monday night.

The victim, identified as Rokeya, was staying at the hospital premises and surviving on government-provided meals. She is currently admitted at the hospital for medical treatment and forensic examination.

The detainees are Md Belal Sikder, son of Mobarak Ali Sikder of Krishnakathi village, and Md Nasir Mullick, son of Yusuf Mullick of Bikna village under Basanda Union in Sadar Upazila.

According to police and hospital sources, miscreants approached Rokeya near the gynecology ward around 3:00AM on Monday night, offering her food. They took her to an unknown location on a motorcycle, where multiple men allegedly raped her.

Rokeya returned to the hospital early in the morning crying. Upon learning about the incident, hospital authorities admitted her and notified the police.

Officers visited the hospital, interviewed the victim, and launched an investigation.

Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital Superintendent Dr. Masum Iftekhar said Rokeya was not a registered patient prior to the incident but stayed on the hospital grounds.

"She has been formally admitted following the incident. CCTV footage from the hospital has been handed over to the police for investigation," he said.

Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mehdi Hasan said the victim remains under medical care for physical tests.

"Based on her statement, we have detained two suspects for questioning. We are investigating whether others were involved. Legal action will be taken once the probe is complete," he added.
