Nationwide gas crisis resurfaces as LNG supply drops again

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply has dropped again following a brief four-day recovery, triggering a fresh gas crisis across the country.
Daily supply plunged to 500 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) after recently rising to 750 mmcfd. Officials attributed the shortfall to harsh sea weather, which prevented LNG vessels from offloading cargo at floating terminals.
Bangladesh relies on two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs - operated by Summit and Excelerate Energy - to meet gas demand.
Together, both terminals hold a maximum daily re-gasification capacity of 1,100 mmcfd. However, total daily supply fell to around 500 mmcfd after a fire broke out at Excelerate Energy’s FSRU in late July.
According to Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), bad weather prevented a new LNG cargo ship from berthing with Summit’s FSRU. Consequently, daily supply dropped back to 500 mmcfd.
An RPGCL official stated that the resolution timeline remains uncertain. Supply will increase once the new cargo links successfully.
48-hour shutdown needed for full capacity
Speaking at an event in Dhaka, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit explained that Excelerate Energy’s terminal off Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar must undergo a temporary 48-hour shutdown to restore full capacity.
He noted that the terminal is currently operating on only one of its two boilers. Activating the second boiler requires halting production completely for 48 hours.
Foreign investors show interest in large LNG terminal
State Minister Amit also revealed that a foreign private business group expressed interest in constructing a new, large-scale LNG terminal in Bangladesh.
Representatives of the group recently met with government officials to present their interest. The government has requested a formal proposal, which will undergo review once submitted.
New FSRU under G2G arrangement
Addressing queries about new FSRU projects, the State Minister clarified that no specific private company proposal has received direct approval.
The government has decided in principle to execute the project under a government-to-government (G2G) framework. Under this model, the government collaborates directly with foreign governments or state-backed entities. Qualified entities among the initial applicants were evaluated to create a shortlist for further processing, he added.
