Colombia earthquake death toll rises to 254

The death toll from a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia has risen to at least 254, with rescue teams continuing to search through collapsed buildings for survivors.
The earthquake struck on Monday, with Pereira and Cali among the worst-hit cities. Pereira has reported 101 deaths, while 95 people have died in Cali, according to Reuters.
The quake caused widespread destruction across western Colombia, with homes, schools and health facilities damaged or destroyed. Thousands of people have been left homeless, while some communities remain without basic services and electricity.
Rescue crews have been digging through piles of rubble using heavy machinery and their hands as they search for people who may still be trapped. The final death toll remains uncertain as rescue and damage assessments continue.
Survivors described scenes of panic and devastation. In Pereira, residents rushed from buildings as they began shaking, while some structures collapsed shortly afterwards.
Thousands of displaced people have been forced to spend days and nights outdoors. In Cali, some residents whose homes were damaged have been staying on the streets, cooking outdoors and searching through the rubble for valuables.
The earthquake struck just days after President Abelardo de la Espriella took office. He has visited the worst-affected areas and pledged financial assistance for the victims.
The quake is being described as the deadliest to hit Colombia this century, with rescue operations continuing across the affected areas.
