The government has ordered all shopping malls, markets, and retail shops across the country to close by 8:00PM to save electricity.

Additionally, all illuminated billboards must be turned off by 7:00PM, according to a directive issued by the Coordination-2 branch of the Power Division on Wednesday (August 12).

The government also instructed authorities to suspend all decorative lighting.

Under the new directive effective from August 12, shopping malls, markets, and shops will operate between 11:00AM and 8:00PM.

Previously, under instructions issued on June 11, markets and shops were permitted to remain open until 9:00PM. The new order reduces operational hours by one hour.

The directive stated that the time limit will also apply to ongoing and upcoming trade fairs, exhibitions, and cultural events nationwide, all of which must wrap up by 8:00PM.

However, essential services, including restaurants, hospitals, and pharmacies, are exempt from the restriction.

Power Division Deputy Secretary Mamun Bhuiyan signed the memorandum, requesting authorities concerned to take necessary steps to implement the order.
