A youth Jamaat leader was detained by locals after allegedly being found in a housewife’s room in Patuakhali’s Bauphal late Wednesday night.
The incident took place in Purba Indrakul village of the upazila on August 12.
The man, Atikul Islam, is reportedly the secretary of the Suryamani Union unit of Jubo Jamaat and son of Sobahan Hawlader of the same village.
According to local sources, the housewife’s husband had gone to his in-laws’ house that night. Atikul allegedly entered the woman’s room late at night. Her father-in-law, Amir Hossain Hawlader, noticed the matter and raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to come and detain Atikul and the woman.
Amir alleged that Atikul had developed a close relationship with his daughter-in-law some time ago. He said Atikul came out of the room after hearing his cries and was later taken away by relatives.
Atikul’s phone was found switched off when contacted for comment.
Suryamani Union village police member Yusuf Hawlader said he was unaware of Atikul’s exact position in the party but confirmed that he was involved with Jamaat. He said villagers had detained Atikul in an objectionable situation.
Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Rafiqul Islam said he had been informed about the incident but could not comment without knowing the details.
Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said police were sent to the spot after receiving the information, but the matter had been settled before they arrived. “Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed,” he said.
