South Korea heatwave ‘cooks’ potatoes underground

South Korea is battling a severe heatwave that has damaged crops, with some farmers reporting potatoes becoming soft and seemingly cooked in the ground.

Farmer Lee Sang-hyuk, from Yanggu, about 130km northeast of Seoul, said he found little suitable for sale when he dug into his potato fields. The crop had been healthy just a week earlier but deteriorated within days amid the extreme heat.

He told local broadcaster SBS that many potatoes had become soft and were breaking apart, resembling boiled potatoes.

South Korea recorded its highest temperature since modern record-keeping began in 1904 when the southeastern city of Yangsan reached 42.5°C on August 2.

The heatwave has killed 31 people and affected around 900,000 livestock and 1.4 million farmed fish, according to the report.

The government has issued heat warnings and advised people to suspend outdoor work.

President Lee Jae-myung told his Cabinet that the country was facing conditions it had “never experienced before”.
