Huawei launches Bangladesh’s first utility-scale grid-forming smart string inverter and BESS

Huawei has launched Bangladesh’s first grid-forming smart string inverter and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the utility sector, aiming to support the country’s renewable energy transition and strengthen grid stability.

The solutions were inaugurated at an event titled “Grid-Forming Technology Powering a Greener Future” held in Dhaka on Wednesday. Huawei South Asia Digital Power Department Managing Director Will Yu, Huawei Asia Pacific Digital Power Business Chief Technology Officer Wang Junfeng, and Huawei South Asia Public Affairs Managing Director Ma Ben attended the event.

The event, themed “The Integration of Solar and BESS Accelerates Renewable Energy Transition,” brought together government officials, utility suppliers, independent power producers, global investors, technical advisers, consultants and EPC contractors from Bangladesh’s power and renewable energy sectors.

Huawei introduced the 'SUN2000-506KTL-H3', described by the company as the industry’s first grid-forming smart string inverter with a capacity of more than 500 kW, alongside the 'LUTERRA-6261-2S/4S' Battery Energy Storage System.

Will Yu said integrating solar power with battery storage is becoming a key component of the global renewable energy transition.

“Solar generation alone is no longer enough , we need intelligent energy storage and grid-forming technologies to ensure renewable energy is available whenever it is needed,” he said.

According to Huawei, the SUN2000-506KTL-H3 offers higher power density, improved system availability, grid-forming capability and intelligent operation and maintenance features. The company said these features can help reduce balance-of-system costs and lower the levelized cost of energy.

The LUTERRA-6261-2S/4S BESS has a reported round-trip efficiency of 92.6 percent and includes pack-level optimisation, cell-to-grid safety architecture, improved state-of-charge accuracy and grid-forming response capabilities.

Masud Rana, head of technical at Paramount Group, shared the company’s experience using Huawei inverters at its 100MW solar power plant. He said the plants, located in remote areas including Lalmonirhat, Pabna, Sirajganj and Moulvibazar, require equipment capable of operating in dusty environments.

He said Huawei’s IP66-rated inverters were selected partly because of their suitability for such conditions, while the company’s low inverter failure rate and technical support were also important factors.

Huawei said the integrated Solar+Storage solution can store excess solar power generated during the day and release it during periods of peak demand. It can also provide functions such as ramp-rate control, frequency and voltage regulation, reactive power support and, where required, grid-forming capability.

The company said the combination of solar generation and energy storage can improve power plant dispatchability, grid compatibility and renewable energy integration, contributing to a more stable and resilient power system.

Huawei said it aims to support Bangladesh’s renewable energy ambitions through technologies designed to improve solar generation, energy storage, grid stability and the integration of renewable electricity.
