India ready to hand over Hadi killers, others sans Hasina

India is ready to hand over the killers of martyr Osman Hadi and other criminals, excluding the former prime minister and president of Awami League Sheikh Hasina. Additionally, New Delhi is also ready to give an assurance that it will no longer allow alleged fugitive Sheikh Hasina to make anti-Bangladesh statements from Indian’s soil. 
Sources in India and Bangladesh’s diplomatic arenas told this correspondent that the Indian government is ready to make every effort to bring Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India. As part of this effort, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to visit Delhi at an appropriate time if all arrangements proceed smoothly.
According to the conditions outlined in Dhaka's message to Delhi on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Dinesh Trivedi, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, held a high-level meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Parliament House in New Delhi for nearly an hour. 
Trivedi currently in Delhi on an urgent visit to personally convey "Dhaka's message" to Modi, following discussions in Dhaka with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and Home and military officials.Trivedi is expected to return to Dhaka on August 14 with Narendra Modi's new directives and message regarding bilateral relations. 
According to New Delhi diplomatic sources, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi presented a summary of his meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and other top officials in Dhaka to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
Sources said Bangladesh-India relations have currently reached a critical turning point, diplomatic discussions between Dhaka and New Delhi have intensified sharply, centering on the extradition of fugitive allegedly convicted Sheikh Hasina-who fled to India after being sentenced for her role in the July genocide-the handover of suspects in the murder of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, and sensitive border and security issues between the two countries.
During a press briefing in Dhaka, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman emphasised that for the multi-dimensional relationship between the two countries to move forward, it is imperative to first create a "conducive environment." Trivedi reportedly sought guidance from Modi on India's next steps toward developing the two countries' historic and enduring relationship in a "constructive and people-centric" direction. Following his discussions with Modi, he is returning to Dhaka with India's internal position and framework, which will influence subsequent diplomatic measures.
Subsequently, in the weekly briefing of India's Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi on Tuesday (August 11), spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified Delhi's stance on various sensitive issues with Bangladesh. Jaiswal stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had received a formal invitation for a bilateral visit to India in February, shortly after assuming office. Additionally, as the current BIMSTEC chairperson, he has been newly invited to participate in the "Outreach Segment" of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12-13 in Delhi.
Regarding Dhaka's demand for Sheikh Hasina's extradition, Jaiswal said, "Our position is absolutely clear. The entire matter is being examined in accordance with India's existing legal and institutional procedures and established protocols." On the handover of suspects in the Sharif Osman Hadi murder case who are in Indian custody, he stated it is a legal matter and that proceedings are currently ongoing.
When journalists asked about the visit of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Parag Jain and other officials to Dhaka on August 9-10 at the invitation of DGFI and their meeting with the Prime Minister's Defence Adviser, Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. A.K.M. Shamsul Islam, Jaiswal evaded the question, saying, "I have no information on this matter. Perhaps the relevant ministry or authority can shed light on it."
However, Dhaka sources confirmed that the Indian intelligence team faced direct psychological pressure regarding the repatriation of fugitives residing illegally in India to face justice under the changed political reality.
Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has made it clear that the relationship between the two countries will not achieve sustainability until an environment is ensured based on sovereign equality and respect. The key to normalising relations lies in stopping border push-ins, preventing border killings, and returning those accused of crimes against humanity.
Diplomatic experts believe that Delhi wants to maintain positive engagement with the Bangladesh government through its messages and legal reviews. India is keen to begin a new chapter in bilateral relations through high-level meetings and the BRICS summit. Dinesh Trivedi's return to Dhaka with Narendra Modi's message and Delhi's final response to Dhaka's demands will determine the trajectory of thawing bilateral relations.
