BD internet back to normal as SMW-5 cable restored

International internet connectivity in Bangladesh returned to normal on Saturday after the country's major submarine cable, Sea-Me-We-5 (SMW-5), was restored following a two-and-a-half-hour outage.

The cable experienced disruptions in both eastbound and westbound links around 11:30AM. Service was fully restored around 2:00PM, averting a major national digital crisis.

Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company PLC (BSCPLC) said it is awaiting a detailed report from the international consortium to determine the exact cause of the glitch.

The SMW-5 cable connects Bangladesh via the Kuakata landing station and carries a significant share of the nation's international bandwidth. It has a lit capacity of nearly 2,200 Gbps, mostly routed through Singapore.

During the outage, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) rerouted traffic through backup connections. The switch caused temporary slowdowns in international browsing, online meetings, and file downloads, though nationwide internet remained functional.

Bangladesh relies on the SMW-4 cable and terrestrial links with India for redundancy. These alternative channels played a vital role in keeping the national internet infrastructure operational during the disruption.

While initial reports pointed to a possible technical fault near Sri Lanka's Matara landing station, final confirmation depends on the SMW-5 consortium's official report. The submarine cable spans from Singapore to France, passing through multiple country landing stations.
