Youth held in Munshiganj for allegedly robbing woman of gold, silver ornaments

Police have detained a 27-year-old man in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj after locals allegedly caught him attempting to rob a woman of her gold and silver ornaments by luring her with a promise of aqiqah meat.

The incident took place around 1:30pm on Saturday near Kobutor Khola Madrasa in Bhagyakul area of the upazila. The detainee, identified as Samrat, is a resident of Jashildia area in Louhajang upazila and works as an autorickshaw driver.

According to police and local sources, Amena, 60, from Char Janaja Khaser Hat area of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur, had come to the Madbarbari area of Kobutor Khola to work at a household. As she could not provide the name of the owner of the house where she was supposed to work, Samrat allegedly took advantage of the situation and lured her to a secluded place on the pretext of giving her aqiqah meat.

He allegedly intimidated her there and took her gold earrings, a silver chain and silver bangles before attempting to flee in his autorickshaw.

Local people noticed the incident, caught Samrat along with the autorickshaw and handed him over to police. Sreenagar Police later took him into custody.

Sreenagar Police Sub-Inspector Moazzem said locals detained the young man and informed police. Officers subsequently took him into custody and recovered a silver chain from his possession. Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway.
