SMW-5 restored after 2.5hrs

After being down for two and a half hours, the Sea-Me-We-5 (SMW-5) submarine cable has been restored.
SMW-5, one of the main submarine cables connecting Bangladesh to the international internet, remained down from around 11:30 am to 2 pm on Saturday. During the outage, internet services experienced slower speeds in several parts of the country including the capital, causing inconvenience to users.

According to sources at Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC), both the eastern and western connections of SMW-5 were down during the period and have since been restored.

Preliminary information suggests that the landing station or associated equipment of SMW-5 may have experienced a fault in Matara, a coastal city in southern Sri Lanka. However, the exact location and cause of the disruption have not yet been confirmed.

BSCPLC sources said international bandwidth continued to be supplied through alternative routes while the cable was out of service. However, internet speeds slowed in some areas due to the disruption.
The situation began returning to normal after the cable connections were restored.
