PM opens National Fish Fortnight 2026 in Kishoreganj

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday released and distributed fish fry in the Old Brahmaputra River at Mirzapur Chairman Bari Ghat area under Pakundia upazila of the district.

He took part in the event after 11:30 AM to mark 'National Fish Fortnight-2026' and exchanged greetings with local residents, said Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary-1 Zahidul Islam Roni.

Earlier, the PM reached Mirzapur Chairman Bari Ghat area around 11:30 AM, where local leaders, activists, and general people welcomed him with slogans.

Strict security measures were taken across the district to ensure a smooth visit.

The PM is scheduled to visit the Carp Hatchery Complex in the Achmita area of Katiadi around 12:30 PM and attend the inaugural ceremony of National Fish Fortnight-2026 at the Achmita George Institution field at 1:00 PM.

This marks the first time National Fish Fortnight is being inaugurated at a national level outside Dhaka. Officials said Kishoreganj was selected to highlight the fisheries potential of the Greater Mymensingh region, known for its vast haors, rivers, and freshwater fisheries.

Entrepreneurs who made significant contributions to the fisheries sector will receive awards at the inauguration.

Following the ceremony, the PM will visit the historic Sholakia Eidgah Maidan at 2:30 PM to inaugurate a field development project and join a tree plantation drive with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists.

After lunch and a brief rest at the Circuit House, he will head to the Old Stadium in the district town around 4:00 PM. There, he will launch the distribution of Family Cards, grant assistance, and honorariums for imams, muezzins, khadems, and staff of various religious places of worship.

He is also expected to inaugurate a pilot scheme to distribute school dresses and bags to students across the country during this visit.

Locals have expressed high expectations from the visit, hoping for progress in communication infrastructure, job creation, implementation of the Kishoreganj EPZ, modern cold storage for haor fish preservation, and tourism development.

According to the itinerary, the Prime Minister is scheduled to depart Kishoreganj for Dhaka around 6:00 PM.
