North Korean troops cross border, South Korea fires warning shots

Tensions have risen along the inter-Korean border after several North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) into South Korean territory, prompting South Korean troops to fire warning shots.

The incident occurred last week in the eastern section of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday.

According to Yonhap, the North Korean soldiers appeared to be on patrol. They returned to the North after South Korean troops fired warning shots, and no further unusual activity was reported.

This was the first reported crossing of the military demarcation line by North Korean troops this year. North Korean soldiers crossed the line 17 times last year, according to Yonhap.

The latest incident comes ahead of a joint military exercise involving thousands of US and South Korean troops. North Korea has condemned the 11-day exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, warning that it could respond with stronger countermeasures.

The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war.
