Australia’s cricket greats have called for changes to the team after Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin on Sunday.
Former captain Ricky Ponting described the defeat as “very embarrassing” and said Australia’s top order now needed serious consideration.
Ponting suggested introducing a new opener and a new No. 3 as part of a rebuild, saying the loss to Bangladesh should prompt selectors to make changes.
Mark Waugh called the result one of the biggest upsets he could remember, particularly given Australia fielded a full-strength side while Bangladesh were without key pacers Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam.
Matthew Hayden suggested moving Travis Head back to No. 5, arguing that the position better suits him than opening. He also questioned the decision to have Alex Carey bat at No. 5.
Bangladesh’s nine-wicket win was their first Test victory on Australian soil.
