Police have arrested Ashik Ahmed, 25, former vice-president of the Mirpur upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, in a case filed over sabotage and disrupting law and order.
A special team of Mirpur Police arrested him from the Katlamari area of Sadarpara Union in Mirpur upazila early Monday, acting on a tip-off, police said. Ashik had allegedly been trying to mobilise people through WhatsApp group calls, according to police and local sources.
Police said Ashik had been in hiding for a long time. He served as the recently retired vice-president of the Mirpur upazila Chhatra League.
Confirming the arrest, Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam Shahid said a case had been filed against Ashik over allegations of sabotage and disrupting law and order. He was produced before a court and sent to jail on Monday morning.
