Clash between Islami Chattra Shibir-backed general students and Fazlul Huq (FH) Muslim Hall provost supporter Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists at Dhaka University (DU) left at least 6, including hall union vice-president (VP) Abu Naim and general secretary (GS) Imamul Hasan injured.

Incident took place in front of the provost’s office at around 2:45 am on Monday. The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Previously on on Sunday, Shibir’s DU unit demanded the resignation and exemplary punishment of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Provost Prof Dr Elias Al-Mamun, alleging that a resident student was subjected to mental harassment, intimidation, phone seizure, threats of a cyber case and forced to sign a written statement.

In a joint statement, DU Shibir President and DUCSU AGS Muha. Mahiuddin Khan and Secretary Kazi Ashik said that such actions violate students’ rights to criticism and freedom of expression and called for accountability for the provost, hall staff and others allegedly involved.

Students claimed to media that hall union GS Imamul Hasan was in critical condition.

Earlier, 2020-21 session student Md Ibrahim said, “I was kept inside the provost’s office for around one and a half hours, where I was subjected to mental harassment and intimidation and forced to provide a written statement.”

Hall Provost Prof. Dr. Md. Elias Al-Mamun denied allegations of harassing the student, saying that they were fabricated against him.

He said, “The student was called in for a discussion after making comments about me on social media. After he admitted his mistake, I allowed him to speak with his mother and released him after offering him refreshments.”

DUCSU Social Service Secretary AB Zubair posted on Facebook on Sunday night that students locked the FH Hall provost’s office after seeking CCTV footage, alleging the provost acted aggressively and vowing to keep it locked pending action.

Protesting the incident, Shibir-leaning students had been blockading the provost’s office since the evening, demanding his resignation.

Two DU pro-vice-chancellors (VCs) Prof Dr. Abdus Salam (Academic) along with Prof Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane (Administration), the acting proctor Md. Israfil Prang and assistant proctors went to the scene at night to control the situation and rescue the provost.

At one point, students supportive of Shibir also confined the university’s administrative representatives inside the office. Two pro-VCs later left the premises.

Eyewitnesses said that a procession of JCD activists then approached the provost’s office, leading to a confrontation with the students who were there.

In the hourly hours of Monday, JCD activists allegedly attacked students aligned with Shibir, including the VP and GS. GS was left bleeding and fell to the floor, while the VP’s clothes were torn. Amid the scuffle, DU proctor also collided with a pillar.

Situation returned to normal after JCD activists took the provost out of the office.

DUCSU condemned alleged attacks by JCD activists on protesting students, demanded an impartial probe into the provost’s alleged abuse of a student, release of CCTV footage, and punishment of those responsible in a press release signed by GS and Shibir’s publicity secretary S M Farhad.

DU Shibir dawah (preaching) secretary Ashikur Rahman Sakib condemned the tagging of a Mohsin Hall elected GS as a “militant” by the hall JCD member secretary, saying student representatives have a duty to stand with harassed students.

FH hall unit JCD informed media that they will submit a memorandum to the proctor, seeking probes into alleged student abuse and the alleged mob harassment of provost.

City University’s Pharmacy department declared Prof Al-Mamun, an adviser and guest faculty member of the department, unwelcome over allegations of corruption and irregularities informed by registrar M M Golam Mohaimen Moharmen on behalf of the vice-chancellor.
