15 named in case over hanging banners in Kotchandpur, one held

A case has been filed against 15 people in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah for allegedly hanging banners and festoons featuring images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina in observance of August 15. Police have arrested one person in connection with the case.
The case was filed with Kotchandpur Model Police Station on Sunday afternoon by Md Azim Hossain, son of Matiar Rahman of Gabtala Para in the municipal area.
Former student leader Md Nasir Uddin Shuvo and former student leader Sheikh Shahin, also information and research affairs secretary of the district unit of Swechchhasebak League, are among the 15 named accused.
The other accused are Obaidul Haque, Swapan Gazi, Md Rubayet Islam Rahul, Md Shariful Islam, Kalam, Nayan Ali, Akash, Nahid, Monmoy, Imon, Md Shafin, Imon Hossain Don and Apu Sheikh. Another eight to 10 unidentified people have also been accused in the case.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly hung banners and festoons featuring images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina near the upazila parishad gate and in front of an abandoned Awami League office in the main bus stand area on the occasion of August 15. The FIR alleges that the activities were carried out to support, assist and promote the activities of a banned political organisation.
Kotchandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Azad Rahman confirmed the filing of the case, saying it was lodged over allegations of hanging banners of a banned political organisation, chanting anti-government slogans and creating an unstable situation.
He said one person had been detained in the case and that police operations were underway to arrest the other accused.
