A leader of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, attended his father’s funeral prayer in handcuffs after being released on parole in Chattogram’s Chandanaish on Monday.

Mohammad Shahadat Nabi, a member of the upazila Awami League executive committee, was granted 11.5 hours of parole from Kashimpur Central Jail to attend the funeral of his father, Nurunnabi Soudagar, 88.

Shahadat was taken to Chandanaish under police escort around 1:30pm and attended the funeral prayer at a mosque in Chandanaish municipality around 2pm, wearing handcuffs. His father was later buried in the family cemetery.

According to police, Shahadat had applied for parole following his father’s death. The Gazipur district magistrate approved his release.
