State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayd on Tuesday stated that Bangladesh disagrees with Myanmar's statement labeling Rohingyas as "Bengali."

She made the remarks in the afternoon following a meeting between Ministry officials and the Myanmar ambassador to Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The state minister said Bangladesh firmly rejects Saturday's statement by Myanmar, emphasizing that Rohingyas hold their own distinct identity and should return to their homeland with that identity intact.

She added that discussions between the ministry's Director General and the envoy were constructive, and the ambassador assured that he would consult his government to expedite the process.

Shama Obayd noted that Bangladesh remains in active communication with the Myanmar government to commence repatriation.

She highlighted that during the Prime Minister's recent trip to China, Chinese authorities firmly assured Bangladesh of exerting necessary pressure on Myanmar alongside diplomatic efforts from international figures like Sergio Gor.

Responding to queries about why Dhaka did not issue a formal public protest against Myanmar's assertion that repatriation should be settled bilaterally without international pressure, she stated that publicly protesting every issue does not always yield solutions.
